Half of the Afghan population suffers from extreme hunger. The combination of prolonged drought, rising food prices and job losses has pushed about 25 million Afghans into poverty, leaving more than half the population now dependent on humanitarian aid to survive. Three quarters of people's income is now spent on food. Six million people are teetering on the brink of famine and 1 million children are suffering from severe malnutrition.
